World Café
The World Café helps a larger group of people discuss a question or challenge that matters to them. This takes place over several rounds at small tables of 4–5 people. Thanks to the Art of Hosting philosophy—which emphasizes self-organization, mutual listening, and seeking deeper connections—the whole group is able to move the topic forward.
Advantages:
-
Deeper, mutual understanding across diverse groups of people within 1–1.5 hours.
-
Concrete takeaways shaped also by the "less outspoken" participants.
-
No need for an external facilitator for each small group—only someone to hold the overall space.
Disadvantages:
-
Preparation in advance and active work with the group during the World Café are needed—I recommend leaving it to experienced facilitators.
-
If you are holding the space, you can't take part in the content discussions.
Example of the World Café etiquette:
-
Introduce yourself if you don't know each other.
-
Contribute and stay focused on what matters.
Speak from your heart. (Use "I" statements.)
Listen with respect and look for deeper understanding.
-
Listen for patterns, themes, new questions.
-
Take careful notes and draw. (Note-takers, please sign your name.)
-
Enjoy!
